Tribute bands are a dime a dozen these days, but in keeping with the exceptional nature of Bob Dylan, Before the Flood earns its title as something more than a mere tribute – this is a Revue of Bob Dylan, the live performer.
In keeping with Dylan’s wandering spirit of creation, invention and reinvention, BtF performs the many live rearrangements of Dylan’s post-60s tours with a strong emphasis on the Never Ending Tour era.
Just as Dylan does with his audience with these reinventions, BtF brings the songs into the moment and not into the past, to celebrate Dylan’s songs as living pieces seeking possibilities, not as museum pieces dead contained under glass for tempered, polite examination.
The show appeals to the serious “Bobcats” but also casual fans and to people who think they don’t like Bob Dylan’s music because they’ve only heard the records – they’ve just never heard it like this before.
BtF started in 2018 with a performance in Kalamazoo, performing the 1974 live album of the same name in its entirety. Since that evening the band has performed Dylan’s catalog chronologically, reaching the present in 2022.
20 shows, well over 100 songs and 25 musicians later, BtF is ready to change your way of thinkin’ of everything you know or think you know about Bob Dylan, one song at a time.
